Software discovery on Linux - Only Packages?
I just wanted to get confirmation that the "Discover Software" option for a Linux host in Auto Discovery only finds software installed from an rpm or deb package?
I have some hosts with miscellaneous Oracle software installed which of course has its own installer system. I was thinking about seeing if I could write some Python to read the Oracle Inventory from a Linux machine or querying Oracle Enterprise Manager for software information, but I wanted to make sure this wasn't something done out of the box or that someone might have some sample code for before I went down that road.

HI Adam, if these are packages installed on Oracle Linux we should be able to discover these out of the box. Would you be able to provide a little more detail on which Linux distributions these hosts are and information about the Oracle installer used so we can verify with development? Thank you!

Hi Chris,
This is software like Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic that doesn't install with an RPM. It uses Oracle Universal Installer (OUI). There is a central inventory of this stuff that it stores in XML files. I have hosts running Oracle Linux 5, 6 and 7 as well as hosts running Oracle Solaris 10 and 11.
I ended up starting a fork of nix_bsd_mac_inventory at https://github.com/adarobin/nix_bsd_mac_inventory. I have it (kind of) working with Linux and almost Solaris although it is still pretty rough.

Hi Adam, I will check with development, thanks for the clarification. Just curious if you don't mind running either our Windows or Linux discovery tool to see if we pull this information in since I know we support Oracle Linux and Solaris. I still want to run this by them but let me know if anything happens when you use either tool. They can be downloaded here: http://www.device42.com/autodiscovery/

Hi Chris, I have run the Windows discovery tool and it only seems to find information about rpms installed on the system.

Hi Adam, sorry for the delay here. Unfortunately, we don't have anything right now. We do discover Applications in our Enterprise App Dependency module, but this is something you guys currently do not have. I checked with development on this and unfortunately since this is a custom installation, there is no immediate road map to work on this right now. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for reaching out on this.
