Cable Inventory

I am coming over to Device42 from a custom designed application that has a lot of functions written into it. I love the patch panel management in Device42 but the one thing I am having a hard time with in transitioning from this custom application is my cable inventory.

When we place an order for Ethernet cables and receive them in, we label them all with serial numbers. Our custom application shows us the inventory and what serial numbers we already have floating around. So from that, we know how to label the new batch. At the same time they are added to the applications database. We are then able to select them and have a full picture of end to end connectivity.

So I think it would be useful to have Front End connectivity for the patch panels where I could pick a cable serial number from my inventory and have it show in the connectivity path. On my server records, I have the network adapters as part of the inventory and I can map a cable to an adapter and then to a patch panel port  My patch panel column actually functions as a hyperlink then over to the switch and shows me the switch port connectivity or the far end. There, I can view Switch Port and cable number as well as the patch panel port again.
