Build a sort of marketplace to share hardware models.
Let me start with a strong sentence: "Creating templates that someone else has already created is a waste of time".
I think that a thought like this is what lead Google in the past years to realize the website "Sketchup 3D warehouse" for SketchUp models: anyone can publish models of any kind and others can benefit of this generosity by downloading them, for free.
In Device42 world, or better, in DCIM world, the need is the same: having ready hardware templates with model data and pictures at your fingertips. Since the world of electronics is full of different hardware devices and Device42 staff cannot easily or rapidly keep up with (I mean making all of these templates pre-built with D42), here it comes the idea: make a template sharing website for Device42 users, or better create a "standard" in the DCIM marketplace like the "Sketchup experience" we all already know and love.
That site would be of great help to speed up data entry even for autodiscovery. Each template can also include technical data, MIBs and anything that can be useful for the management software.
The bad thing I see nowadays by using D42 is that after I've created my hardware models for non-existent templates in D42 I'll keep them on my private system only. I do not have a place to share them in a form that is usable/searchable by others.
You may consider it a sort of "community" (closed/open/free you decide) for Device42 regarding templates, hardware models and so on. I've seen that other vendors of bigger/pricey DCIM solutions have some sort of this idea but I'm not aware of how they have implemented it.
IMHO, it may be worth.

As we are using a lot of different hardware that are specialized for specific purposes, I spend a lot of time creating hardware models. I would really like to be able to share my special Supermicro servers and storage JBOD's and maybe get some of the other strange Netgear or Supermicro switches from someone else.
I think it is a great idea :-)

yah i just started using device42 and i'm amazed this is not a thing. also to have device42 have their own models for extremely popular hardware.
