Feature Request - Hardware Inventory
CompletedI would like to be able to put in extra entries for hardware in the devices. Currently in a device we are able to add one line for CPU Memory and HardDisks.
What i am asking for as a feature request is either a new subheading for installed hardware, or to be able to expand this heading.
For example, right now one of my machines is running Solaris 11 and is used as an iscsi target for backups.
a) there is more than 1 type/size of hard drive in this machine and more than 1 zpool. There is no way to add more than one array, or drive size to Device42 that i can find (nor does it list raidz or raidz2 etc). I know this may be a big change but it might be nice for a lot of people.
b) This is where the separate tab for hardware might come in to play, it would be nice to inventory my hardware integrated into Device42. So in that above backup machine, it would be great to be able to show a list of the 2 Intel 710 SSD's, 20 WD2003FYYS Drives, 2 Seagate ST3500630AS along with their appropriate serial numbers, slot description and when the warranty is valid until. We are currently using a WIKI for this but again its nice to have everything in one heading. Same goes for more than just harddrives, add HBA's, NIC's, Motherboard, CPU to that mix :)
I know its a BIG request but it would definitly be a nice to have.
Feel free to contact me for more info.

I see i used to be able to have more than 1 line of drives, however there may have been a regression or maybe something was missed in an upgrade as its no longer available?

Nicholas,
Did you use the additional drives in device properties? We haven't deleted any data(tools > export, device properties to confirm), but are planning to make a change to the display of CPU, total memory and hard disks for 2 reasons:
1. Reasons mentioned by you, need a better display for multiple hard disk decoupled from cpu/ram.
2. We are working on APIs to populate CPU and total RAM info for devices, so we would have single row for that. We are planning to add a different view for additional info like RAM modules breakdown and for hard disks.(This way updating CPU, total RAM would be easier).
We would later work on the design aspect of it all as to where to display all this additional information without cluttering the main view for the device.
Hardware inventory would be after we get the design(UI) part figured out and we would also try to incorporate run-book idea as suggested by Jonathan here: https://device42.zendesk.com/entries/20931551-device42-feature-automation.
Let me know your thoughts and all ideas are welcome.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Regards,
Raj.

Nicholas,
We have added a "collpased" additional harddisks option in release 2.3.3 as shown below. You would be able to add additional raid types as well and a brief description for the array or disks. I will email you the update, as we haven't published it yet.
We might move this to a different tab or a use a different UI for this finally, but you can atleast start saving your disk information here and future updates won't change your data(possibly just the UI).
Please test it out and let us know if this helps with documenting the additional arrays etc.Regards,

Following is in the design phase right now. Putting it out to get some feedback on where we can improve. We are breaking down device additional properties into 3 tabs: Main, Hardware and Other(UI and names subject to change). Please share your ideas.
Here is the hardware section:Harddisks
Memory details
CPU Details
Other hardware components

v3.1.1 with hardware inventory (and spare parts management) and with lot of exciting features around asset and inventory management, better rack diagrams has been published. Please get the update file from http://www.device42.com/update.
Please note that customers on v2.4.2 or v2.4.3 would need to migrate to v2.5.0 appliance first before applying the v3.1.1 update.
