Custom Tabs
A CMDB to me should be a single source of truth for all information about inventory/assets and to me should include information on whether a system is backed up or not, where that backup lives, what the retention is and why, and how frequently it's being backed up. Yes that information should also live inside whatever backup solution a company has, but often times for someone who is not the admin of a backup system, being able to pull out those kinds of statistics/metrics for a large set of systems is not an easy task. Backups are my particular use-case for this feature request, but I'm sure there are other uses as well.
The Custom Field section as it exists now works well, aside from the fact that they all live inside the "Other" tab. If you have a series of custom fields that all deal with one topic (backups for instance), those will all fall in line (alphabetically) with any other custom fields you might have. Someone who's not in Device42 everyday might not know to look in the "Other" tab to find this information, and when they do, may get confused as to why backup information is mixed in with other unrelated fields.
My proposed solution to this would be the ability to create custom tabs. These tabs would show up in the same list as Properties, LifeCycle, Other, Mounts, etc... when viewing the object. A user could create a custom tab called "Backup" for instance. They would then associate that tab with any object type they feel it should show up on (Device, Building, PDU, Vendor). They would also associate the custom tab with any custom field that exists. Then when viewing the object type they assigned their custom tab to, that tab would be visible, and only show the custom fields related to that tab.
I get that the custom fields as they are currently associate with object types. This is unfortunately somewhat limiting if you want to track the same custom field across multiple object types. My custom tab method would alleviate this and provide some more flexibility. If you move ALL custom fields to the same area (meaning disassociate them from the object types) and keep them flat all at the same level, you can choose any that you want and associate those with the custom tabs.
Please let me know if you need any more clarification on this, I'd love to help make this happen.
Thanks!
